The Artist as Prophet begins with a thematic exploration of the Jazz musician and poet, Ted Joans claiming that we having nothing to fear from the poet, but the truth. Rookaaker then traces the notion of artist as prophet, beginning with the neo-Platonic school, through various treaties on art, music, literature, until the twentieth-century, ending with the artistic movements of 1960s. Dr. Rookmaaker provides a clear response to why Christians cannot accept the old theory that the poet is a prophet, and to clarify the implications of such a notion in Christian endeavors in the arts. On May 28, 1965 the writer delivered the customary inaugural speech marking the assumption of a professorship at a Dutch university, in his case in the history of art at the Free University at Amsterdam.
